FURSUIT CARE
Keeping your suit clean is the most important and time consuming part about owning a suit! This is a guide on how to care for a suit made by Stray Fur Studios.
SUITS ARE NOT WASHING MACHINE TESTED. Hand wash only.General CareYou will want to fully wash your suit after every public outing! However, the less full washes you can put your suit through, the better! For a quick sanitizing and refresh, use fursuit spray on the inside and outside of your fursuit. Brush the spray into the fur. BE CAREFUL AND AVOID GETTING THE EYES WET! DO NOT USE PERFUMES NOT MADE FOR USE ON FURSUITS!! Proper suit sprays can be found on websites like Etsy, at furry convention spaces, or you can look up how to make some yourself!Brush your suit regularly to ensure it stays looking nice. However, you should avoid brushing any felt details on the face! I like to brush an area, then smooth it down with my hand afterwards to ensure a polished look. All suits from SFS come with a slicker brush, but you can purchase them at your local pet store or online!RepairsFursuits require regular maintenance and upkeep. It is not uncommon for a seam to pop, but don't worry! Most issues are easily fixed with a sewing kit.Close any holes that appear with a blanket or ladder stitch. I recommend using a curved needle for tight spaces, and upholstery thread to ensure durability.Stain RemovalIf you go suiting frequently, chances are you'll get a few stains on your suit! However, getting these pesky problems out is easier than you think!
Purchase the stain remover Folex, and follow the instructions on the bottle! It will get rid of even the most difficult to clean stains in minutes.Deep Cleaning
I highly recommend investing in a Bissell Little Green Machine! It speeds up the cleaning process and makes everything a lot easier. Just cover your suit's eyes, use the nozzle to spray it, then watch as the vacuum cleans out all that dirt and grime! A full tutorial is located here. However, if you do not have a Little Green, here is how you can hand wash your fursuit piece by piece.Paws, Tail, Feetpaws, Bodysuit, Padding
- Fill a tub with lukewarm (NOT HOT) water. Add a small amount of faux fur safe detergent for delicate materials while the tub is filling. I use a very small amount of Woolite for delicates. DO NOT USE SHAMPOO OR ANY OTHER KIND OF HARSH CLEANER.
- Submerge your suit parts and scrub. Fully saturate the parts with the water/detergent solution. I recommend washing one thing at a time (tail, then paws, then feet, etc.).
- Drain the tub and squeeze all of the soapy water you can from the suit parts. Rinse the parts to get all of the soap out.
- Repeat the process as necessary until the water is no longer brown after you saturate the pieces.
- Once fully clean, set the pieces out to dry on top or in front of a fan to ensure that mildew doesn't develop from a moist environment.Head
SFS heads are NOT waterproof, meaning the eyes WILL run if too much moisture is gotten on them. To avoid this, follow these special steps for washing.
- Fill a bowl with WARM (NOT HOT) water, and add a very small amount of delicate detergent just like with the other parts (see above). You don't need much to get the job done.
- Cover the eyes with a paper towel or cloth, stuffing the eyeblanks so that no moisture can get inside. You will need to cover them from the inside too.
- Remove any piercings, accessories, etc.
- Using a washcloth, gently scrub your fursuit head, focusing on the inside and the mouth, as that is where a lot of sweat and heat accumulate when wearing.
- Once you feel your head is clean enough, switch to a bowl of plain water and wash the soapy water out of the head. Once again, be careful to keep the eyes dry.
- Set the head on a fan to dry. You want to dry the inside as fast as possible to avoid the growth of mildew.Questions regarding cleaning or caring for your fursuit? Feel free to message me.
